Unit 8 begins! This unit covers making a tudor bodice, a pair of stays (which is actually just one item – essentially a corset. A fellow classmate told me to remember it like a pair of trousers, but you have two legs, not two torsos… It still occasionally takes me off guard!) as well as interpreting an entire costume, out of a few choices presented to us.
We’re working on Macbeth, which is great as it is one of the plays I’m most familiar with (I played one of the witches recently even!) but we have a fairly modern take on the clothing presented to us. If I’m being completely honest, I’m not too keen on any of the designs. Thats no fault of the designers, they are lovely, it’s justt not really what I think of when I think of Macbeth. I also feel that the costumes are a bit of a mish-mash, and while they have some visual coding, stripped of context I would have a difficult time determining who is who. I do usually suffer from a lot of unease whenever a new unit starts though, so hopefully it is just that at play.
All that said though, I settled on the main witch design – I really want to push boundaries on my current knowledge, and this having a Tudor French Hood, as well as latex gloves, I can push the boat out and try new materials and techniques. I also enjoy how visually striking this particular design is, and there is more to it than meets the eye – That will be elaborated on as I continue through this project!
